From Nonprofits to Novels: My Genre-Hopping Journey to Becoming a Published Author

Book on a table

Well, someone pinch me. Or better yet, pour me a celebratory cup of coffee (or a large glass of wine, depending on what time you’re reading this). I am officially, officially… a published author! If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be trading my corporate spreadsheets for cover designs and manuscript formatting, I probably would have laughed you right out of the room.

For twenty-eight incredible, fulfilling, and let’s face it, exhausting years, my life was firmly rooted in the nonprofit sector. I loved the mission-driven work, but my soul always harbored a sneaky little secret: I was utterly, hopelessly in love with writing.

I had dabbled in it before, of course. My first real taste of “professional” creative writing was a unique gig where I created engaging characters, story lines, and snappy dialogue for an online charter school. It turns out that making educational content entertaining for kindergartners is the ultimate boot camp for dialogue formatting. But the dream of writing a whole book—a real, hold-it-in-your-hands book—was always in the cobwebby recesses of my mind.

The Inspiration Close to My Heart

So, what finally pushed me off the ledge and into the deep end of the publishing world? It wasn’t a sudden burst of corporate rebellion (well maybe a little). It was my daughter.

Watching her struggle with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) – recently renamed Poly-endocrine Metabolic Ovary Syndrome (PMOS) – broke my heart, but it also ignited an absolute fire under me. As a nutrition coach, I knew the science, the metabolic connections, and the lifestyle shifts that could help manage this frustrating and often misunderstood syndrome. But more than that, as a mom, I wanted her—and millions of women like her—to have a resource that felt empowering, clear, and utterly practical.

That fiercely personal mission became the blueprint for my very first book, The Ovary-Achiever’s Guide to Mastering PCOS (PMOS) and Insulin Resistance. Based on my daughter’s and my personal experience, it’s aimed at helping women navigate their hormonal and metabolic health with confidence.

A Serious Case of Genre ADHD

Now, while my first literary baby is firmly planted in the health and wellness sector, I have a tiny confession to make: I have an absolute inability to stick to one genre. Some authors find their niche and stay there forever. Me? I want to play in the whole literary sandbox.

While I absolutely plan on writing more health and self-help titles down the road, my brain is already buzzing with wild fictional worlds, sharp-witted characters, and swoon-worthy romance novels. Yes, you heard that right! We are going from metabolic health to modern romance, because why choose between balancing hormones and writing a dramatic kiss in the rain? Stay tuned, because future works are going to get delightfully unpredictable.

Country Roads, Marriage, and an Ewok

The wild ride of becoming an author has been perfectly mirrored by the beautiful chaos of my personal life over the last few years. In a massive plot twist, I packed up my life and moved from the frantic energy of the big city to a small, quiet, rural Pennsylvania neighborhood. And let me tell you, I am absolutely in love with it. There is something about the country air that just clears the mind and invites the creative muses to pull up a chair.

Even better, I get to share this peaceful country life with my favorite person. Two years ago, I married Mike who has been my absolute rock, chief cheerleader, and the patient soul who listens to me ramble about word counts and chapter outlines over breakfast.

Last year, we completed our family picture with our newest, most demanding addition: our weird little Shihpoo, Cash. He doesn’t just walk into a room; he commands it. He expects undivided attention at all times, and I am 99% convinced he is actually a displaced Ewok from Endor because the noises he makes are purely cinematic. He has officially taken over the role of “Assistant to the Author,” which mostly involves sitting on my feet while I type and snoring loudly during plot brainstorming sessions.

So here I am: a former nonprofit executive turned rural-living, genre-hopping, Ewok-raising published author. Thank you all for being on this beautiful journey with me. Grab a copy of The Ovary-Achiever’s Guide, and get ready—because the romance novels are coming next!

Cheers and happy reading,

Jennifer
